Okhla (Gautambuddh Nagar)
Destination Description
During the months of October to March, the Okhla Bird Sanctuary is visited by thousands of migratory birds including Shoveller Duck, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Gadwall Duck and Blue Winged Teal. It is an ideal place for nature lovers and bird watchers. The Okhla Bird Sanctuary (OBS) has an area of approximately 4 square kilometres and is situated at the entrance of NOIDA in Gautam Budh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated at a point where river Yamuna enters the state of Uttar Pradesh leaving the territory of Delhi. It is one of the 15 bird sanctuaries in the state.
Okhla Bird sanctuary (OBS) is located in National Capital Reason, Delhi (NCR) on the river Yamuna and Okhla Barrage at the entrance of Noida in Gautam Budha Nagar district of U.P. and Eastern boundary in Noida and Western boundary in NCT of Delhi. It is one of the 466 IBAs (Important Bird Areas) in India. It is roughly 4 square kilometres in size and is one among 15 bird sanctuaries in the state. Location 28035'56.3" N Latitude and 77018'56.6" E Longitude in U.P. 28032'43.5" N Latitude and 77018'41.7" E Longitude in Delhi More than 324 bird species are reported from Okhla out of this about 50% are migratory birds and a 36% are resident birds and others are vagrant sightings or of unknown category. Forty percent of the total birds are common locally and the rest are uncommon or rare. The total bird list includes two Critically Endangered, nine vulnerable, seven Near Threatened and one Conservation Dependent species. At a closer look it can be seen that 50% of the birds reported are migratory.
Cultural Aspect
The sanctuary is situated on the river Yamuna, which is one of the holiest rivers in the Indian culture. The area falls in National Capital Region as such people come to this wetland to worship waterbody flora and fauna according to their regional ancient culture.
Flora
A variety of both native and exotic species (188) of plants can be seen in Okhla Bird Sanctuary. The water body is mainly covered in patches by water hyacinth eichhornia cracippes and water lettuc pistia stratiotes. Hydrilla verticillata, vallisnaria spiralis potamogeton pecpinatos potamogeton crispus are the common submerged vegetation. The reed bed Typha angustata and Phragmites maxima are abandoned along the deltas and bank providing habitat for birds of all kinds of the sanctuary. The banks have a variety of trees (30 species) like Fycus, Babool, Sheesham, Semal, Subabool, Keekar and several shrubs (10 species) and herbs (9 climbers, 16 grases). This provides excellent hiding the roostring site for the birds.
Fauna
More than 320 birds species were recorded, out of these, 20 common residents - water birds, and 44 common residents - woodland species and 43 migratory water birds species and 26 woodland species.
About 10 species of threatened birds recorded including species of critically endangered (CR) birds. Species of nearly threatened (NT) birds recorded.
About 10 species mammals including Nil Gai, Indian mongoose, blacknapped hare, jackals, 8 species of reptiles, and 2 species of amphibians, 87 species of fishes, 30 species of butterfly are recorded here.
